A browser extension for Chrome and Edge.
Coming soon. The extension is built (version 0.4.1) and is not in the Chrome Web Store or the Edge Add-ons store yet, so there is nothing to install from this page. We are not giving a date.
You are on a product page at a Canadian retailer. Click the extension, and it tells you the lowest price we have recorded for that same product, which retailer we recorded it at, and when we saw it.
What you see
• The lowest price we recorded for a new unit, the retailer, and the date we saw it. • A link to that retailer. It is an ordinary link and nothing happens until you click it. • If an open box or returned unit is cheaper, it is shown separately and labelled. New and open box are two numbers, never blended into one. • Where we have the history, the lowest and highest new price we recorded over the last 90 days, on its own line.
It does nothing until you click
The extension asks for three permissions: activeTab, scripting and storage. It asks for no access to any website. That means the browser lets it see only the one tab you clicked it on, and only after you click. It does not run when a page loads and it does not look at the pages you visit. If you click it on a site we do not follow, it reads nothing and sends nothing, and tells you so. It does not change the page you are on, it does not touch a cart or a checkout, it has no coupon feature, and it does not put a number on its icon.
What it sends
After a click on a retailer site we follow: the address of that page, the product details the page already publishes for search engines, and one short piece of text if the page shows a model number. If we recognise the product, it also asks us for the 90-day price range, and that request carries only our own identifier for the product. It counts five anonymous usage events, each the result of a click, keyed to a random number made on your device. It never sends your browsing history, anything you type, your location, your name or your email. The full list, word for word, is the extension privacy policy.
Prices are records, not live quotes
Every price the extension shows is one we recorded at a point in time, and it always shows the date. Check the retailer page before you buy.
